Bryan has a long association with service, having spent most of his career with either the RAF or the MOD, serving in the RAF from 1960 until leaving for civil life in 1998, serving across the globe including at bases in Norfolk, Northumberland, Lincolnshire, St. Andrews, Germany, Cyprus, Bahrain, Aden, and coming to Stafford in 1993.
On leaving the RAF, Bryan worked in the stores at MOD Stafford until taking retirement in 2008.
Bryan was married to Lily for 59 happy years having met at RAF Acklington in Northumberland, having three children during this time. And he is blessed with 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, whom he dotes on.
Bryan’s first foray into local politics came in 2003 when the Labour administration on the Borough Council proposed to turn a children’s play area into a teenager facility, which he opposed as a local resident living on Parkside. And he has been involved and on the Council ever since.
Bryan has a passion for planning and regeneration, serving as the chair of the Planning Committee over three separate terms and Vice Chair twice. Bryan has also served on the Planning and Regeneration Scrutiny committee.
Bryan was Mayor of Stafford Borough in 2012 / 13 and enjoyed every minute of his time as the First Citizen of Stafford, especially in seeing first-hand the marvellous work that the voluntary sector undertakes in the Borough.
Outside of the Borough Council, Bryan has been a Governor at Parkside Primary Academy Trust School for twenty years, finishing in April 2023 and a Trustee of two local charities for many years, The Roger Hinton Trust and the local Almshouse.
Bryan also continues to support the Royal Airforce Association, and the Reserve Forces and Cadet Association amongst others. And he has been a life-long sportsman, with a passion for walking, and when in the RAF would often walk a marathon distance 26 miles or more at weekends just to keep fit.
Bryan was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty The Queen in 1996.
